Construction of Reijolankatu site entrance to begin in August
The construction site is expanding to the southern edge of the site.
A new temporary road providing access to the Laakso Hospital from Reijolankatu is due to be built in the middle of August.
Northbound traffic blocked by current excavation works
The open-face blasting crew has made good progress in the Laakso Hospital area and is now working its way toward the southern edge of the site. The excavation at the northern end of the site is ten meters deep at the moment.
More than 90,000 solid cubic meters of rock have been extracted so far, which equates to almost 50 percent of the total volume of rock to be removed by open-face blasting.
Heavy machinery can no longer make it up the ramp from the ever-deepening excavation, which is why the crew is having to build a new site access road from Reijolankatu. The new entrance on Reijolankatu will also help to reduce congestion at the Auroranportti entrance.
The new road will be one-way. It will be used by trucks and other vehicles approaching the site from the direction of Pasila. Vehicles will continue to exit the site via the gate located next to the McDonald’s at the southern end of Urheilukatu, where they turn left toward the city center. There is no northbound construction traffic on Urheilukatu.
The new site entrance on Reijolankatu will not affect pedestrians and cyclists. Traffic officers will be on hand to direct traffic and ensure safety at least until the new traffic arrangements become established.
New hospital to be accessed from the corner of Reijolankatu
The Reijolankatu gate will also remain in use after construction works have been completed. One of the entrances to Laakso Joint Hospital will be located at the southwestern corner of the new main building.
The new entrance from Reijolankatu will be especially useful for patients arriving at the hospital by public transport, as a bus stop will ultimately be built right outside.
