New forensic psychiatry hospital building completed in Ohkola – operations to begin in autumn 2026
The new forensic psychiatry hospital building has been completed for HUS Helsinki University Hospital in Ohkola area in Mäntsälä. The Laakso Joint Hospital Alliance handed over the facilities to Real estate limited company Laakso Joint Hospital and HUS in the end of August. The new hospital building will open its doors to patients later in fall 2026. Some of the patient wards will continue to operate also in the current Ohkola Hospital.
The new hospital building in Ohkola is part of the Laakso Joint Hospital project, and it was built by the Laakso Joint Hospital Alliance. Real estate limited company Laakso Joint Hospital is the client of the construction project.
“The history of the Ohkola hospital here in Mäntsälä goes back 65 years, and now it receives a worthy continuation. On behalf of the municipality, I want to thank the decision-makers of the City of Helsinki and HUS for deciding to locate the new forensic psychiatry hospital building here in Ohkola. For the municipality, the decision is important, as it also secures the future of the existing hospital building and jobs”, says the Chief Executive of the Municipality of Mäntsälä, Hannu Laurila.
Versatile patient-centred care in modern facilities
The scope of the new building is approximately 8,000 gross square meters with 56 patient beds. Ohkola Hospital’s current activities will move into the new hospital building.
The single-story hospital building has been adapted to the existing hospital area and the surrounding park-like environment, providing patients with good opportunities to spend time outdoors. Although the building is functionally connected to the existing Ohkola Hospital via a connecting bridge, technically the building will be an independent entity.
The section connecting the old and new buildings houses premises that support treatment, such as therapy rooms, meeting rooms, visitor areas, and a gym. The new building will also house the hospital’s main entrance lobby, service kitchen, and staff restaurant.
The new facilities will be taken into use in autumn 2026. HUS will inform about this at a later time.

All project parties around the same table
The alliance implementation model has brought all parties of the project to the same table. This has enabled the coordination of the building services and structures with the hospital’s functional solutions. The solutions have been developed together with the future users – the staff of the Ohkola Hospital – so that the result would meet the needs of patients, staff and family members as best as possible.
Ground was broken on the construction site in Ohkola Hospital area in July 2024. The construction work started in August 2024 with excavation and ground reinforcement work in the area. The foundation stone was laid in November 2024, and the topping-out ceremony was celebrated half a year later, in June 2025. The hospital building was completed in the end of August 2026 and it will open its doors to patients later in fall 2026.

The well-being, safety and continuity of the hospital and the local people living nearby have been our starting point throughout the entire project. - Climate risks: A climate risk assessment has been carried out for the new hospital building, ensuring the building’s resilience against extreme weather phenomena, such as increased rainfall and rising temperatures.
- Construction emissions: Based on the emission calculations carried out in the planning phase of the project, less carbon-intensive structural, material and implementation solutions have been chosen for the hospital building.
