What will the new hospital be like?

The City of Helsinki and HUS will reform the Laakso Hospital area in the 2020s. We are building three new hospital buildings and renovating two existing ones.

The Laakso Hospital area will be reformed for the benefit of customers and patients.

The City of Helsinki and HUS will renovate the buildings in the Laakso Hospital area especially for the benefit of customers and patients. The treatment of psychiatric and physical (somatic) illnesses will be close to each other. Customers and patients will receive help from one single location, and professionals in different fields can collaborate to facilitate the solving of treatment-related issues.

The Laakso Joint Hospital project will also build a new building in the Ohkola hospital area in Mäntsälä.

The Laakso Joint Hospital project will continue until 2030. The new Laakso hospital buildings will be put into use in stages starting in 2027.

Appropriate facilities will contribute to rehabilitation and healing. The modern hospital will provide facilities for providing the best possible care. For example, almost all customers and patients will have private rooms and bathrooms, which gives peace and quiet for recovery. We are renewing treatment with modern technologies.

From the point of view of the personnel, it will be easy and expedient to work in the new premises. The latest technologies, such as robotics, will free up working hours for nursing work. Laakso Hospital will be a major teaching and research hospital.

The construction of new hospital buildings is essential, as the existing buildings are in poor condition. It is not possible to repair them to meet current requirements. The location of Laakso Joint Hospital has been carefully thought out, as the new hospitals will become part of the Meilahti hospital area. The location of Laakso Hospital is central in the junction of good public transport connections and the hospital is easy to access.

The hospital area will produce its own energy and take environmental objectives into account. New buildings consume energy sparingly and meet environmental objectives well. The energy sources are geothermal heat and waste energy from ventilation, as well as solar power and district heating.

Traffic on the residential streets nearby will not increase, although the amount of traffic to the hospital area will be increasing. Underground access roads in the hospital area, as well as parking facilities and maintenance facilities, will reduce traffic volumes on the residential streets. The nature values of the area have also been taken into account, as the underground driving connections protect the Helsinki Central Park’s gate.

Treatment for psychiatric and physical illnesses

Laakso Joint Hospital will provide treatment for psychiatric and physical (somatic) diseases. The hospital will have facilities for:

  • Psychiatric inpatient wards for HUS and the City of Helsinki
  • HUS’s specialized neurological rehabilitation
  • half of the wards of Helsinki City Hospital
  • outpatient clinics supporting hospital operations
  • teaching and research.

The hospital access roads will change

The hospital’s new transport connection will be built in the tunnel under the Central Park via the Aurora Hospital intersection. A logistics tunnel will also be built to Meilahti from the Laakso Hospital area.
