Tunnel excavation begins on June 2nd – crew to also work Saturdays as of June 10th

Underground excavation is less disruptive to the neighborhood than open-face blasting.

Work has begun on the vast network of underground facilities and road tunnels under the new main building of Laakso Hospital. The tunneling crew began its work on Friday, June 2nd. The workers broke ground at the western end of the Laakso riding arena, near the grandstand.

A crawler drill – nicknamed “Jumbo” – has been making holes in the rock in preparation for blasting since the end of May.

Underground excavation is less disruptive to the neighborhood than open-face blasting. There will be no noise or dust emissions from underground blasting. This is why the tunneling crew has been authorized to also work in the evenings and on Saturdays.
