Demolition of building exteriors begins on Urheilukatu
The works are due to be completed by the summer.
The demolition of the apartment buildings at Urheilukatu 9 has progressed swiftly. The contractor began dismantling the interiors of the buildings in early March and is now getting ready to start on the exteriors. The northernmost building will be the first to come down.
The buildings are being demolished to make way for the southernmost tip of the new main building of Laakso Hospital.
Practically all the work at this stage can be performed by diggers. The buildings will first be stripped of their exteriors until only the stairwell and the elevator shaft remain.
Normal construction noise to be expected
Normal construction noise is to be expected during the works, but demolition is not a particularly noisy process in itself. Demolition crews normally work from 7.00 a.m. to 8.00 p.m. from Monday to Friday. Any particularly noisy works will be timed to take place between 7.00 a.m. and 6.00 p.m.
Traffic in and out of the site to approach Urheilukatu from the south
Traffic in and out of the site will use the entrance at Urheilukatu 9, approaching Urheilukatu from the south via Reijolankatu. In order to leave enough space for large vehicles to turn, a few parking spaces on Urheilukatu will be temporarily unavailable.
A new site road will be built later in the spring to allow construction vehicles access directly from Reijolankatu.
Dust emissions to be controlled by wetting
The dismantling of the building exteriors will generate some dust. Dust emissions will be controlled by wetting the structures beforehand. The piles of demolition waste can also be wetted if necessary. Fire hoses will be used to spray whichever area the demolition crew is working on at any given time.
The pre-construction works are being carried out by the Laakso Joint Hospital Alliance for the City of Helsinki. The contractor is Demolition Yard Ltd.
The works will be completed by the summer.
