Topping out ceremony for new hospital building was held in Ohkola

The topping out ceremony for the new hospital building in Ohkola was held on Friday, June 6, 2025. The new hospital building is being built next to Linjatie, alongside the existing hospital.
The new hospital building in Ohkola is a part of the Laakso Joint Hospital project, which is being built by the Laakso Joint Hospital Alliance (LYS) for the City of Helsinki and HUS. Functioning facilities for the treatment of psychiatric and somatic diseases will be built in Laakso hospital area in Helsinki and Ohkola area in Mäntsälä. The project is one of the largest in Finland.
“In Mäntsälä, we have been following the progress of the construction of the new hospital building in Ohkola with great interest. It’s a significant investment for the municipality and it has been pleasant to read that the construction is progressing on schedule. We also appreciate that LYS respects the traditions of construction and that in addition to the groundbreaking ceremony held in November, a topping out ceremony is also being held,” says Hannu Laurila, Chief Executive of the Municipality of Mäntsälä.

Modern treatment facilities for the benefit of patients
The scope of the new building is approximately 8,000 gross square meters with 56 patient beds. Ohkola Hospital’s current activities will be moved to the single-story hospital building. The section linking the old and new buildings will house premises that support treatment, such as therapy rooms, meeting rooms, visitor areas, and a gym. The building will also house the hospital’s main entrance lobby, service kitchen, and staff restaurant.
“The new hospital building in Ohkola has been adapted to the existing hospital area and the surrounding park-like environment, providing patients with good opportunities to spend time outdoors”, says Juha Lempinen, Design Director at real estate limited company Laakso Joint Hospital.
Although the new building will be functionally connected to the existing Ohkola Hospital, technically the building will be an independent entity.
Ground was broken on the construction site in Ohkola Hospital area in July 2024. The hospital building will be completed in spring 2026 according to the current plan and it’s expected to open its doors to patients later in 2026.
“We operate in Ohkola as part of a respected and traditional community. The well-being, safety and continuity of the hospital and its surrounding environment have been our starting point since the beginning of the project. It is important to us that we achieve a successful outcome that meets the needs of the staff, patients, customers and their loved ones, while also achieving the financial goals set for the project. To ensure this, the project’s design and implementation solutions have been developed and implemented in close cooperation with the designers, users, client and alliance partners,” says Jouni Forsman, Director, SRV.

Environmental aspects are considered in all phases of the project
A climate risk assessment has been conducted for the project, which has helped to ensure that the building can withstand extreme weather events, such as increasing rainfall and rising temperatures.
All new buildings in the LYS project will be designed and constructed so that their energy efficiency is at least 10% better than the current national regulatory level for new construction. The energy efficiency figure of the Ohkola building is approximately 13% lower the national regulatory level.
Majority of the heating energy for the new hospital building is covered by geothermal energy. The geothermal field consists of a total of 20 wells, approximately 300–360 meters deep. The remaining heating need is covered by an electric boiler. The geothermal wells are also utilised for the cooling of the building.
In addition, an extensive solar power system will be installed on the roof of the building, consisting of a total of 530 panels and a capacity of 212 kWp (kWp, kilowatt peak, or the peak power of the solar power system).
Based on the emission calculations carried out in the planning phase of the project, less carbon-intensive structural, material and implementation solutions have been chosen for the hospital building.
