Groundbreaking ceremony for new Ohkola hospital
A new forensic psychiatric hospital is under construction next to the existing Ohkola Hospital building in Mäntsälä. The hospital’s foundation stone was laid at 2 p.m. on November 5, 2024.
The new Ohkola Hospital building is a part of the Laakso Joint Hospital project to build a psychiatric and somatic hospital in the Laakso area. A new hospital building is under construction in the Ohkola area of Mäntsälä from 2022 to 2026. The Laakso Joint Hospital Alliance is executing the project. The Laakso Joint Hospital is a joint venture of the City of Helsinki and HUS and one of the largest hospital development projects in Finland.
The foundation stone of Ohkola Hospital was laid on November 5, 2024. Information about the project, copies of the day’s newspapers, and coins used in Finland were enclosed in a time capsule for future generations.
“We are delighted that the City of Helsinki and HUS have decided to construct a new forensic psychiatric hospital building here in Ohkola, Mäntsälä. At the same time, the future of the existing hospital will also be ensured. It is a significant investment for the society and the municipal economy,” says Hannu Laurila, Chief Executive of the Municipality of Mäntsälä.
“The new building under construction in Ohkola is the biggest advance in forensic psychiatric treatment in the history of HUS. The new hospital is expected to be better-equipped to provide versatile patient-oriented care and the means to reduce the use of coercive measures,” says Jesper Ekelund, Director of Psychiatry at HUS.
Design consolidates old and new into a balanced whole
The existing Ohkola Hospital and the new building under construction will form a balanced whole, representing the hospital design perspectives of their respective eras.
The new building will be functionally connected to the existing Ohkola Hospital, but technically, it will be an independent entity. The new, mostly single-story hospital building will be located in a low-lying park area. The building and the fence surrounding the area have pile foundations. The building will have a concrete frame with a facade made of grooved, colored concrete and brown steel.
“The alliance implementation model has brought all the parties involved in the project around the same table. This has enabled the coordination of the technical building services and structures with the hospital’s functional solutions in a natural way,” says Juha Lempinen, Design Director at real estate limited company Laakso Joint Hospital (Kiinteistöosakeyhtiö Laakson yhteissairaala). The real estate company acts as the client for the construction project.
New building in Ohkola to be completed in spring 2026
Ground was broken on the construction site in the Ohkola Hospital area in summer 2024. The new hospital building is being built next to Linjatie, in front of the existing hospital. According to the current plan, it will be completed in spring 2026. The hospital is expected to open its doors to patients later in 2026.
“We operate in Ohkola as part of a respected and traditional community. The well-being, safety, and continuity of the hospital and the local people living nearby have been essential to us from the outset. We have developed the design and implementation solutions for the project in close cooperation with the designers, tenants, client, and alliance partners to ensure an optimal outcome. A successful outcome will mean that the new buildings and premises meet the requirements of the personnel, patients, customers, and their relatives while reaching the financial targets set for the new Ohkola Hospital building,” says Ossi Inkilä, Project Manager of the Laakso Joint Hospital Alliance. SRV is the project’s main contractor.
The scope of the new building is approximately 8,000 gross square meters with 56 patient beds. Ohkola Hospital’s current activities will be moved to the single-story hospital building, and in-patient wards will be built in the wings. The section linking the old and new buildings will house premises that support treatment, such as therapy rooms, meeting rooms, visitor areas, and a gym. The building will also house the hospital’s main entrance lobby, service kitchen, and staff restaurant.
