Preparatory work for construction in the Laakso Hospital area begins
Preparatory work for construction will also begin in Laakso riding field.

The Laakso Joint Hospital Alliance is launching preparatory work for the redevelopment of the Laakso Hospital area. During 2022–2030, the Alliance will be constructing three new hospital buildings and renovating another three protected hospital buildings. Construction of the hospital area’s new vehicle tunnel will affect Laaksonkenttä for years.
Preparatory work for construction will begin this spring. Interior demolition work is beginning at the former Laakso healthcare centre in April. Traffic will access the demolition site via Lääkärinkatu until the new construction site access route is completed in the summer.
In 2021, the Laakso and Töölö healthcare centres were merged into Kivelä healthcare centre. The services that were previously located at Laakso healthcare centre were transferred to Kivelä healthcare centre earlier this year.
Preparatory work for construction will also begin in Laaksonkenttä and Aurorankenttä. The first phases have already been carried out in the Aurora Hospital yard, and work will continue later in the spring.
The construction project will affect the area between Laaksonkenttä and Aurora Hospital for years, as the entrance to Laakso Hospital’s new vehicle tunnel will be located right next to the Aurora Hospital gates. The construction of underground facilities for vehicle tunnels and hospital buildings will require extensive earthworks and quarrying. The Laakso horse-riding arena will be used by the construction site in two phases during 2022.
New site access road from Laakso Hospital area to Laakso horse-riding arena
Most construction site traffic will access the Laakso Hospital area along an access route that is currently under construction: a ramp will run down from the Laakso Hospital area to Laaksonkenttä, and then through the Aurora Hospital intersection to Nordenskiöldinkatu.
Pedestrians and cyclists will still be able to use Aurora Bridge as before, except for the occasional days when it will be closed.
The pedestrian and cycle path that runs from between Children’s Traffic Town and Laakso Hospital to Central Park has currently been diverted. However, the original path will be reopened in summer 2022 when municipal engineering has been completed along the route. The pedestrian and cycle path will pass under the new site access route via a bridge culvert.
Road traffic will continue on Nordenskiöldinkatu as usual, with the exception of cable transfer work near Children’s Traffic Town in June. The aim is to carry out this work at night.
